Update to 2019’s NJ Ride For The Cure!
Thanks to the generosity of many people and a few organizations we’re happy to announce that we’ve met and exceeded our 2019 goal of $10,000 for the two research funding organizations. It’s thanks to all of YOU and the staff and ownership at Cross-Country Motorsports that this was a success.
Will we do it again? That’s up to you. Please let me know your feelings on how it went this year, and if you’d be interested in doing a similar fund-drive next year. If we do it next year, I have a list of really odd places to send you to – and I’ll give you more time to do them. This year the scavenger hunt was a bit compressed due to time constraints.
Please reach out to me at: firstname.lastname@example.org – with your ideas, gripes, suggestions – whatever. I’d love to hear from you. If you have any photos to share of the event at Cross-Country, please email them to me – I’d love to put an album of the 2019 event up!
And once again – a big THANK YOU! to everyone who helped make 2019 Ride for the Cure a success!
Welcome to NJ Ride For The Cure!
The clubs are at it again – we’re putting together a fundraiser in memory of one of our NJ club members, Harold Gantz, who passed away last August, much too young, from prostate cancer, after living with it for over a decade.
Prostate cancer is often called by people the “good cancer”.. it’s anything but. In 2018 about 32,000 men died from the “good cancer”.
Lots of details can be found at:: https://www.pcf.org/about-prostate-cancer/what-is-prostate-cancer/ – but the takeaway from this is – prostate cancer is too often lethal, always life-changing, and about 1 out of 9 men will be diagnosed with it sometime in their lifetime. In our own local club – out of 55 members – there are 6 people who have or are dealing with prostate cancer. In surveying the other NJ BMW clubs – its roughly the same. I’m currently under treatment for it, as are more than 20 other BMW club members in NJ.
What is this event?
The four BMW clubs in NJ – Skylands BMW Riders, North Jersey BMW Riders, New Sweden BMW Riders and NJ Shore BMW Riders are forming a fundraiser in Harold’s memory, one year from the date he passed. It starts on August 1st, ending on August 11th, 2019 at Cross Country Powersports, Rt 27, Metuchen NJ at 12 noon. Cross Country has generously opened for our event, and provided us with a location and amenities needed to make this happen. They’re also providing food and drink for attendies.
The RIDE is a DIY scavenger hunt – done at your own pace. You’ll be visiting various historic sites in NJ, and documenting it using your cell-phone. The list of sites will be revealed on this website on August 1st to everyone who has registered. All of the locations are public and located in New Jersey. They are spread throughout the state.
The rider may ride solo, in a group, or however they prefer. They must take a photo of themselves at the location with their bike showing that they rode to the site. It’s suggested these be taken on your cell phone. Each site documented will result in another door-prize ticket. Certain items that were donated that are sized, or specific for a certain bike – we’ll have individual drawings for just that item. The rest of the items will be drawn as general door-prize items.
Documentation must be presented (on your cell phone preferably) at the sign-in for the event, at which time you’ll be given your door-prize tickets. Tickets also will be presented on the basis of your donation to the organizations we support, on the basis of 1 ticket per $20 donation. IE – if you donate $100 to either organization, you’ll receive 5 door prize tickets at our check-in for the awards.
This RIDE format allows you to ride on your own schedule, solo or in a group you form, at your own pace. This is not a group ride – it’s a suggestion of interesting places to visit and take some photos of.
The EVENT at Cross Country will be for us to get together, tell lies, kick tires and other things motorcyclists do when gathering, and to pick and award all the door prizes.
You can register by visiting one of the foundation donation websites shown below – click the button and you’ll be taken to an event specific webpage for NJ Ride for the Cure. These are both 501(c)3 organization, and donations may be deductible. The minimum donation is $20/person. EACH person coming to the final event at Cross-Country must show a receipt from one of the organizations – this will be your ticket to door-prizes and food!
Who is it for?
The beneficiaries of the fundraiser will be two prostate cancer organizations:The Prostate Cancer Foundation – (PCF) funds independent research in prostate cancer treatments – and they’re searching for a cure. Over 84% of the funds donated to them go directly to research. They are a worldwide organization, and very highly rated by charity rating groups.
The ZERO-Cancer organization is a US based foundation, focused on funding research and supporting current prostate cancer victims. They also send over 83% of the funds they receive directly out to research grants and services for men suffering with prostate cancer.
Updates on the event will appear here as they happen! And the “Locations” list will appear here on August 1st!
Suppose I don’t want to do the ride part? Can I participate? Or just donate to the cause?
– Sure, we welcome any donation, even if you’re not interested in the ride. Donate a minimum of $20 to either foundation and your receipt will be your entry ticket to the event (and food and possible door prizes.)
– If you just want to donate to the cause (not do the ride or the event) – please select one or both foundations below – click the button and make a donation. Your donation will help fund research to end this awful disease. We thank you for that!
– You also can make donations AT the event – and receive door prize tickets (1 ticket per $20/donated) or additional door prize tickets.
